Dear friends and colleagues:

Regretfully, in light of COVID – 19 and direction from government and health officials, the Edmonton Consular Corps has made the difficult decision to cancel our planned 2020 Edmonton Consular Ball scheduled to have been held at the Fairmont Hotel Macdonald on Saturday, April 25, 2020.

In many respects, the decision to cancel the 2020 Ball was made for us. Proceeding with the event at this time would be irresponsible and against the advice provided by government and health officials. You can read the public announcement of Alberta Health Services here: https://bit.ly/2U8M3C5

To those of you who have already made a payment by cheque for this year’s Ball, your cheque will be returned to you in the coming days.

On behalf of the Edmonton Consular Corps, we would like to thank you for your continued support and we look forward to welcoming you at the 2021 Ball. Please visit our website at edmontonconsularcorps.ca for updates and announcements.

Be safe and healthy.

Best wishes,

The Edmonton Consular Corps Executive

The Edmonton Consular Corps is proud to host the 40th Annual Edmonton Consular Ball. The Edmonton Consular Corps is a vibrant member of Edmonton’s community that serves to foster people-to-people, cultural and trade relationships among their host countries and the citizens, corporations and Government of Alberta. The Edmonton Consular Corps is comprised of 28 Honorary Consuls whose jurisdictions represent over 2.1 million Albertans.

Each year a member of the Edmonton Consular Corps agrees to chair the ball and as a result, the country they represent becomes the theme for the event. This year’s ball is chaired by the Honorary Consul of Japan, Dr. Olenka Bilash.

A gala evening of fine dining and themed entertainment will set the tone as an introduction to Japan, showcasing its economy and culture to the business and political leaders of Edmonton.

ABOUT the 2020 country host:  japan

Starting your own business and picking the

right niche in no time

Japan is an island country located in East Asia. It consists of 6,852 islands in a northeast-southwest arc that stretches for approximately 1,500 miles (2,400 km) through the western North Pacific Ocean.

Complexity and contrast are the keynotes of life in Japan—a country possessing an intricate and ancient cultural tradition yet one that, since 1950, has emerged as one of the world’s most economically and technologically advanced societies. Heavy emphasis is placed on education, and Japan is one of the world’s most literate countries.

Tokyo is the capital city of Japan and also the largest city. Other major cities include Osaka, Nagoya, and Sapporo. As of 2019, there are over 126 million people living in Japan, which has the tenth largest population in the world.

Japan is the host of the 2020 summer Olympic and Paralympic Games.2020 marks the 50th Anniversary of the Alberta Japan Office (AJO) in Tokyo, the 40th anniversary of the Alberta-Hokkaido sister relationship, and over 90 years of Canada-Japan diplomatic relations. Partnerships have been further strengthened through sister cities as well as sports, arts, academic and business exchanges. Japan is Alberta’s third largest trading partner.
